Why Is Physical Self-Care Important?

When we’re physically healthy, we feel better about ourselves and are better able to cope with the stresses of everyday life.

That could be everything from eating healthy and exercising, to getting enough sleep and managing our stress levels.

Prioritizing our physical health for black women is especially important because we often put the needs of others before our own. We’re also more likely to suffer from chronic stress and diseases like hypertension.

How to Incorporate Physical Self-Care Into Your Life

Now that we know why physical self-care is important, let’s look at some ways we can incorporate it into our life.

Let me know below if any of these ideas enlightened you, or if you have other tips to share!

1. Getting Enough Sleep

Most people need around eight hours of sleep per night. Getting enough sleep or sleeping in is some of the best physical care anyone can do for themselves.

Consider going to bed and waking up at the same time each day to help regulate your body’s natural sleep rhythm.

Think of a time when you consistently went to bed on time and woke up feeling refreshed. Chances are, you had more energy throughout the day and felt better overall.

Do yourself a favor and commit to a regular sleep schedule.

3. Drink Plenty Of Water

Dehydration is the last thing we want our bodies to go through, so make sure you’re drinking enough water each day.

Some creative ways to get your water intake up is to invest in a water bottle that you love and make sure to refill it often, add slices of fruit or herbs to your water for flavor, set reminders on your phone or computer to drink water at regular intervals, carry a small notebook with you and check off each time you take a sip.

4. Get Moving

One of the best things you can do for your physical health is being active! This doesn’t mean you have to go to the gym 7 days a week, but even 20-30 minutes of movement each day can make a big difference. Find an activity you enjoy and try to do it every day.

Today, you can create your very own home office gym with little to no equipment. There are a number of exercises you can do without any weights such as push-ups, sit-ups, and squats. If you want to take your workout up a notch, consider purchasing some basic equipment like dumbbells or resistance bands.

5. Meditation And Mindfulness

Meditation and mindfulness are excellent ways to focus on the present moment and clear your mind. If you’re new to meditation, there are a number of apps and websites that can help you get started. Once you find a practice that works for you, make time for it every day.

Now, I have to admit, finding a good meditation app hasn’t been easy because I’ve had issues with a lot of them making me sleepy, but I’ve recently fallen in love with one and it’s called Headspace.

6. Take Physical Breaks

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or to help mitigate the aforementioned symptoms, take a few minutes to yourself to relax and rejuvenate. This could mean taking a hot bath, reading your favorite book, or spending time outside in nature.

Physically getting up and going to another area or environment can do wonders for your body and mind, especially if you’re feeling overwhelmed and bogged down. If you can, get up every 30-60 minutes to take a quick walk or just change your physical environment.
